Remembering the Journey

For more than four centuries, millions of African men, women, and children endured one of history’s greatest human tragedies. Families were torn apart, villages destroyed, cultures disrupted, and generations forever changed through the transatlantic slave trade.

Many were forced from their homes, marched hundreds of miles in chains to the African coast, and imprisoned before being loaded onto overcrowded slave ships. During the horrific Middle Passage, countless lives were lost to disease, starvation, violence, storms, and unimaginable suffering. Millions never reached the shores of the Americas, and those who survived often faced the pain of being separated from their families forever.

Yet through extraordinary faith, resilience, perseverance, and hope, generations of African descendants helped build communities, strengthen America, enrich culture, advance education, inspire innovation, and contribute to the progress of humanity.

The Big Prayer Museum exists to honor that journey.

Our mission is not simply to remember history—it is to transform remembrance into responsibility. Through prayer, education, participation, service, and positive action, we invite people from every nation, culture, faith, and generation to learn from the past while helping build a better future.

Standing on historic Texas soil, the Big Prayer Museum seeks to become a nationally recognized destination for remembrance, reconciliation, learning, and unity—a place where descendants of the African diaspora, together with people from every walk of life, can reflect, pray, heal, and work together for a stronger tomorrow.
